Kent DUI Court

In July 2017, Kent Municipal Court started a DUI treatment court based on the National Center for DWI Courts model. The program is designed for high risk/high needs defendants charged with a third DUI/DWI related offense in their lifetime. Typically, a person going on a third offense in a lifetime would be looking at 1 year in jail based on my expierence with the court.

A treatment court is designed based on evidence backed practices that reduce recividism. Defendants that are in DUI court are called participants. The Kent Municipal DUI court is a minimum 24 month program that includes heavy supervision. It requires weekly court hearing, about 3 random drug/alcohol tests per week, alcohol and drug treatment, weekly probation meetings, homework assignments, community service, and many other requirements. The goal is to treat the participant and reduce the risk of future DUIs in order to increase public safety.
